The Awakening
by Apryl Baker

Snap...crackle...pop. The sounds of bones breaking and shifting and of muscles tearing haunt Alexandria Reed.

For the last five years, Alex has been locked up at Compton Academy, a "school" for the emotionally challenged. She calls it the politically correct way of saying they’re all nuts and Alex has no doubts she’s insane. She comes home to Jacob's Fork to face the demons she left behind her after deceiving the doctors into believing she’s well. Soon after her arrival home though, news of her estranged mother's death brings her uncle back into her life and she and her brother, Jason, learn a terrifying secret about their family.

After questioning her sanity for the last ten years, she discovers the night terrors she's suffered for so long has become a reality. She and her brother are now being hunted because of the secret her family has killed to protect. Her world has been turned upside down, every belief she held true destroyed. Aided by her new friends, who have some dark secrets themselves, can she and Jason survive long enough to figure out the secret behind the secret?

About the Author
So who am I? Well, I'm the crazy girl with an imagination that never shuts up. I LOVE scary movies. My friends laugh at me when I scare myself watching them and tell me to stop watching them, but who doesn't love to get scared? I grew up in a small town nestled in the southern mountains of West Virginia where I spent days roaming around in the woods, climbing trees, and causing general mayhem. Nights I would stay up reading Nancy Drew by flashlight under the covers until my parents yelled at me to go to sleep.

Growing up in a small town, I learned a lot of values and morals, I also learned parents have spies everywhere and there's always someone to tell your mama on you. So when you get grounded, what is there left to do? Read! My Aunt Jo gave me my first real romance novel. It was a romance titled "Lord Margrave's Deception." I remember it fondly. But I also learned I had a deep and abiding love of mysteries and anything paranormal. As I grew up, I started to write just that and would entertain my friends with stories featuring them as main characters.

Now, I live Huntersville, NC where I entertain my family and watch the cats get teased by the birds and laugh myself silly when they swoop down and then dive back up just out of reach. The cats start yelling something fierce...lol.

I love books, I love writing books, and I love entertaining people with my silly stories.

Preview: Waken by Angela Fristoe

In celebration of Waken making into the final stages of editing, I have another excerpt to share! Don't forget to add Waken to you 'Want to Read' list on Goodreads!

Waken (The Woods of Everod, #1)
by Angela Fristoe
Expected Publication: September 1, 2014

Haunted by nightmares of her mother killing her, Janie just wants to be normal.

Davin is out of her league and the emotions he draws from her are almost enough to make her ignore all of the weird things he says.

Almost enough to ignore the way the entire town seems ready to pounce on her as if she were fresh meat.

The town of Everod has been waiting for Janie and if she hopes to survive, she’ll need to confront the truth of who and what she really is.

Excerpt from Waken by Angela Fristoe

Everod, Colorado hadn’t been my idea of a grand plan. Almost a month ago, Tim packed us up and we moved to the middle of nowhere, forty minutes from the closest town, Telluride, which didn’t say much. Tim thought nothing of moving. Since Elin left, we’d moved countless. I think part of him was searching for her, hoping that with each new city he’d spot her in a crowd.

Maybe that’s why we finally ended up here. This was her town. This was where she’d lived in the years before she had me and the only place she’d ever stayed for longer than a few months. It was where her mother had lived. Tim probably thought she’d come back here some day. I’m pretty sure he was also holding out the hope that if I connected with her roots I’d come to forgive her for leaving like he had. I couldn’t tell him that her leaving was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Bouncing around, my hand gripped the panic handle, white knuckled. We rounded a bend and saw a small parking area already lined with a handful of vehicles. Justin pulled up and I slid down in my seat. People wandered over to greet him as he got out. Doubts engulfed me. I wanted to crawl into the back seat and huddle behind my book. Cooking wasn’t so bad. I could handle it for a month.

A knock on the window refocused my attention. Justin stood there, his eyebrows raised in question.

“Relax. They won’t bite,” I muttered to myself as I reluctantly climbed out of the car. I didn’t go far, just leaned against the door, hunched over with my arms wrapped around myself. It was a position Elin had taught me well. I straightened up and banished all thoughts of her. Justin was preparing to throw me to the wolves this morning and I needed to be ready. Sixty-seven days. I could make it.

Pandora Spotlight: Invisible by DelSheree Gladden

PANDORA Box Set
20 novels and novellas by 20 amazing authors!
Available from: Amazon, Kobo, Nook

Invisible (The Aerling Series, #1)
by DelSheree Gladden
Published: October 2013

Olivia’s best friend is not imaginary. He’s not a ghost, either. And she’s pretty sure he’s not a hallucination. He’s just Mason.

He is, however, invisible.

When Olivia spotted the crying little boy on her front porch at five years old, she had no idea she was the only one who could see him. Twelve years later when new-girl Robin bumps into the both of them and introduces herself to Mason, they are both stunned.

Mason couldn’t be more pleased that someone else can see him. Olivia, on the other hand, isn’t jumping at the chance to welcome Robin into their circle. Jealousy may have something to do with that, but honest fear that Robin’s presence will put Mason in danger is soon validated when a strange black car shows up outside Olivia’s house. The race to find out what Robin knows in time to protect Mason from whatever threats are coming becomes Olivia’s only focus.

Review: Home by Brenda Kearns

Home
by Brenda Kearns
Published: July 12, 2014
Available: Amazon

Synopsis:
It’s Allie’s 14th birthday, and she’s in her 17th foster home. “Suck it up,” her mom says. “Play the game and they’ll let you come home.” And Allie’s great at the game—at lying about her mom’s drinking, at hiding the weird things her little brother does that worry social workers, at pretending the counseling is actually helping. Allie is so great at the game that she never has to stay in a foster home more than three months.

Now Allie has a problem: Her newest foster family has caught on to her game. They see right through her lies, and they’re trying to stop her from going back home. Ever. Yet the last place Allie wants to live is on a smelly old farm in the middle of nowhere.

But how do you fight it when everyone around you is saying that where you were born isn’t where you belong?

HOME is a touching tale about a girl struggling to reunite her family, protect her young siblings and gain control of her life—all in the face of family problems that no one believes she can fix.

Review:
Home by Brenda Kearns was completely different than I had anticipated. I usually prefer books where I actually like the main character. That is a big factor for me. Yet, I never really like Allie and I didn't need to. Allie's goal isn't to make anyone like her, it's to get her and her two siblings home. Kearns does an amazing job of getting us into Allie's mind, so that while I didn't like her, I understood her.

Kearns' personal experiences have obviously given her a view into the mind of a young foster child, and this builds the authenticity behind Allie's voice. I do wish the story were longer (it is a novella). I wanted to find out what happens next  because it is more than evident that Allie's journey is far from over.

When the evil you fear is born from within, who will save us…from ourselves?
Sometimes our souls hear what our minds and hearts refuse to accept. It will whisper its continuous cadence until we're strong enough to glimpse the truth. But when the soul's whispers morph into screams, we're forced to gaze into the mirrors of time and see ourselves for who we really are.

Grappling with her newfound leadership position, Stasia begins to experience a recurring nightmare of murder, as well as curious reveries about a violet-eyed girl who can control the moon. When tragedy grips the Tydes and several important relics are stolen from the Sons of Daimon, Stasia’s Council leaves for the forgotten island of Atlantis. Unfortunately Atlantis harbors its own secrets, and they are all calling to Stasia. As her nightmares become worse and she begins to lose control of her mind, those around her must find a way to reach her…and fast.

Olivia Campbell is used to getting what she wants, when she wants it. But destiny never asked Olivia what she wanted. Being Chosen to be a Paladin at birth had not been something she wanted, and she definitely hadn’t wanted her charge to be Anastasia. Unfortunately their irritatingly persistent Atlantean guide, Sebastian, seems to know all about her and the secrets she’s been hiding. As she fights to protect Stasia from an unknown force, Olivia’s own courage and loyalty will be tested in ways she never imagined. Will she be able to tell Stasia the truth before it’s too late for them both.

About Kristen Day

I am a southern belle at heart with a crazy streak that desperately tries to escape at every opportunity. I love all things nostalgic, rustic, and quirky. I've been told I see the world through rose-colored glasses, but I prefer to think of them as kaleidoscope glasses - swirling and morphing reality into something I can digest (who hasn't pretended those pasty lima beans were really kiwi strawberry jelly beans?).

When I'm not writing I'm making jewelry, painting, drinking sweet tea, watching the discovery channel, or going on random adventures in the mountains of North Carolina with my amazing husband.
