Possibilities

So, I've had a new character, Maddie, in my head lately and I haven't yet decided what to do with her. I now where she first introduces herself and a bit about her personality. The part that's got me stuck at the end of my first chapter with her is where exactly is she going? It's really starting to frustrate me because I have a picture of her passing through a portal. She's standing right in front of it and until I know where she's going I can't move forward with the story. I know, I know, I should plan this kind of stuff out so that this exact thing doesn't happen but frankly I'm resigned to being a "fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants" writer. Once she gets where ever she's going I'll have the rest of the story since I have scenarios for each possible setting. I just can't decide where Maddie's portal leads, too.

  1. arrrrgh i can't answer that question! it's too many different possibilities to choose from! try thinking of a scenario YOU would most enjoy writing about... e.g. if you'd like to write about magic make it a world with different laws; if you'd like to write science fiction go to the future or to a different planet; if you love a certain period of history, go there; if you are interested to write about spiritual matters, have the portal be the gateway to the afterlife. if you know maddie's motivation or the motivation of the baddies, that might help you decide. for e.g. do the baddies want to come into our world/time for some reason, or take prisoners back through the portal? does maddie want to go through the portal to discover a cure that will help a relative who is dying?

  2. LOL! You can vote more then once if you like :) As for Maddie, she's going to get sucked into the portal so it's not really her choice. I'm leaning towards an alternate reality or a parallel universe.

  3. How about she moves from Western Canada to the East! Not only like Penny but like that woman in "The Shipping News" by Annie Proulx, who goes to Newfoundland or Nova Scotia. I would imagine it would be quite an upheaval.
